City seeks feedback on snow and ice control

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Winter road maintenance affects everyone in Medicine Hat whether driving, walking, cycling or using public transit.

With memories of winter fresh on everyone’s mind, the City is seeking feedback as part of a review on how it manages snow and ice control.

“We want to hear exactly what people think is working and what some of the challenges are and any kind of feedback is welcome,” explained Municipal Engineer, Michael Knight. “You know, even if it’s ‘hey, you’re doing a good job’ or ‘hey, I see some challenges here’ we’re looking for all of that.”

This will be the first public review on snow and ice removal since 2011.

Knight was unable to provide a clear answer as to why it took the City roughly 8-years to conduct another consultation.

“I can’t really speak to that. We just see merit in continually evaluating our practices. We’re going to be looking at any changes since our last review. We’re going to be looking at changes in weather, materials, technology and in our community.”

The City will be hosting two open-houses in regards to this matter.

The first will be taking place on April 4th at the Municipal Works building.

The second is scheduled for April 9th at the Family Leisure Centre.

Both will run from 4:30 pm – 7:30 pm.

“At the open-houses there will be lots of representatives there to facilitate discussion if people want to have a face-to-face chat about some of the challenges they see and have their feedback heard directly.”

If you aren’t able to attend either of the open-houses, Knight says the survey will be posted online on April 4th and will run until April 25th.

“The survey online will have some of the information that will be posted at the open-house. That way, everyone is armed with the same info. If people would like additional information, but they can’t attend, I’ll work with everyone to make sure they get the information they need.”

Knight says after the submission deadline, they will compile this information and hope to complete the review by early 2020.

He says it is important that as many Hatters as possible take part in the upcoming consultation.

“I encourage everyone to come to the open house or take the survey. We want to make sure the program we put in place is appropriate for our community and I think it’s prudent to make sure our community has their voice heard in this.”
