REDCLIFF, AB — Spaghetti and meatballs, chicken parmesan and taco’s. At the Redcliff Youth Centre, dishes like these are exactly what kids are learning to cook.

“It’s very important. It’s everyday life. You have to know how to cook,” said Sandra Cooper, a Youth Support Worker at the Redcliff Youth Centre who helps the kids cook.

The program takes place with a goal in mind, to cook up a better future.

“Whenever they’re ready to make that step, some of our youth do it at sixteen. It’s whenever they’re ready to gain that independence and feel confident in themselves,” said Brett Tobler, Youth and Wellness Program Coordinator at the Redcliff Youth Centre.

Tobler, a student at Medicine Hat College, believes this is an important step to growing up as he went through the experience of starting to live on his own before.

“Even myself moving out, I didn’t have that independence and it was a hard time cooking. So, living off ramen and everything. Now here you get to learn how to cook actual meals,” said Tobler.

Tobler says many kids have grown a passion for cooking, including Blake, who said he’s also started cooking at home.

“I’m always proud of my cooking,” said Jenson.

The program will continue to run on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at the Redcliff Youth Centre.
