Polar Plunge 2019

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It wasn’t nearly as cold as in years past, but the 2019 Polar Plunge was yet another success.

“The first year was really cold,” explained MHPS Constable, Aaron Bredik. “But, today we had beautiful weather, so I can’t complain. This is my third time and I’ve been here every year, so I figured if I organized it, I should jump in. It’s very cold, but you get out, get in that hot tub and I’m feeling good.”

Each year, the Medicine Hat Polar Plunge raises roughly $15,000 to support Special Olympic Athletes for their training costs and upcoming events.

“They play sports for pure love and we want to be able to support them in what they do. So, for ten seconds in the water and out, I can raise money and help.”

Special Olympics Athlete and local resident Terri Didack was also in attendance for this years event.

“Without the funds, we wouldn’t be able to go to places,” explained Didack. “It’s good that there’s funds to support us along the way.”

Didack says hosting a community event like this gives her pride.

“If we didn’t have the Special Olympics and had to compete in regular sports, we’d never have a chance and I feel with having disabilities, it’s an even playing field.”

Didack opted to not take the plunge this year, but she is looking forward to next years event.

“I think just once, we should have our athletes do it because it’s for support for us and the things that we do. Next year, I’m going to do the plunge with Steve Bohan from CHAT 94.5.”
