MEDICINE HAT, AB – Dreams of a provincial championship are still alive for Medicine Hat’s Connor Zeidell rink following a clutch victory in the ‘C’ bracket on Saturday morning.

Facing relegation to the consolation bracket at the Curling Alberta U18 Boys Provincial Championship, the Zeidell rink was able to double up the Ben Hill rink out of Peace River 4-2 to stay alive.

Coming out of the gates early, Zeidell was able to pick up two points in the first end before stealing another point in the second end to jump ahead 3-0.

Hill was able to get on the board with a single in the fourth end, but Zeidell answered back two ends later to extend his lead by a 4-1 count.

Team Zeidell allowed another single from Hill in the seventh end, but that’s as close as the Peace River foursome would come.

Winning Saturday’s do-or-die contest, the local rink of Zeidell, Cole Lewis, Bryson Helmle, and Kolby MacDonald have punched their ticket to the championship playoff event.

Team Zeidell, who now hold a 3-2 record in the bonspiel, will face the winner of Saturday afternoon’s ‘C’ bracket match between Edmonton’s Aaron Power rink and the Nicolas Oake rink from St. Albert.

The provincial quarter-final match will be held at the Medicine Hat Curling Club at 7:00 pm in Draw 7 action.

Also on Saturday, it will be a rematch of the ‘A’ bracket final in the 1 vs. 2 page playoff between Grande Prairie’s Cortland Sonnenberg rink and St. Albert’s Nathan Molberg foursome for a spot in Sunday’s provincial final.

U18 Girls Provincial Championship

The first three playoff qualifiers have been determined on the girls side as well, entering the penultimate day of competition at the U18 Girls Provincial Championship.

On Friday afternoon, the Julia Bakos rink out of Edmonton’s Crestwood Curling Club edged out the Jessica Wytrychowski team from Airdrie 7-6 in the ‘A’ bracket final to advance to the 1 vs. 2 page playoff game.

That game will see a rematch of the ‘A’ final however, as Wytrychowski defeated the Rachel Jacques rink on Saturday morning 10-2 in the ‘B’ qualifier to book her spot in the championship play in game.

Team Bakos will take on Team Wytrychowski at 2:00 pm on Saturday with the winner advancing to the gold medal final.

The third playoff spot was clinched on Saturday morning as well, with Cochrane’s Zoe Cinnamon rink picking up two points in the eighth end to take down the Ryleigh Bakker rink 7-6 in the ‘C’ bracket.

She’ll face the winner of Team Jacques and Team Thangadurai in the championship quarter-final, who will battle for the final playoff spot on the girls side on Saturday.
