MEDICINE HAT, AB — A Medicine Hat man charged with first-degree murder in connection with a 2017 homicide will be advancing to a preliminary hearing later this year.

A preliminary hearing for Robert Hoefman will take place May 27 and 28 at Medicine Hat provincial court. The hearing will determine if there is enough evidence to proceed with a trial.

Hoefman, 56, was charged with first-degree murder in January 2018 in connection with the death of James Satre, 63.

On October 11, 2017, Satre’s body was found in an area near Mill Street Southeast and Smelter Avenue.

Hoefman was originally arrested and charged with one count of extortion in November 2017. Police allege the extortion and Satre’s murder are connected.

Hoefman has remained in custody since his arrest. A request for bail was denied in November.
