Local resident keeping busy in retirement

REDCLIFF, AB – After eleven-years of retirement, Gord Herod says he likes to keep busy by sharpening skates at the Redcliff Arena.

“Well, it keeps me out of the house from fighting with the boss and gives me something to do in the winter,” explained Herod. “I also love hanging out with the kids and basically, that’s it.”

Herod has been sharpening skates for 51-years and to him, it’s all about offering a quality service.

“To be quite honest with you, kids aren’t getting proper skate sharpenings these days, so that’s another thing. I take pride in doing the skates and I give them a pretty good skate sharpening for their money.”

Logan Skagen is a resident of Redcliff and has been bringing his skates to Herod for five-years.

Even after his minor hockey career finished, Skagen continues to come back to the Redcliff Arena to see Herdon.

“I just keep bringing them back because he’s very consistent,” explained Skagen. “They’re sharp every time. I know exactly what to expect and he’s a good guy. It’s a good way to support a local business.”

And Skagen appreciates the hard-work by the 72-year-old.

“He’s a great guy to have in the community and it’s awesome to see even people from Medicine Hat come out to support a local guy.”

Herdon says he definitely sees a bit of traffic from not only Redcliff, but the surrounding area as well.

“I get quite a few people that come up from the Hat, Dunmore and whatnot. Just enough to keep me busy.” 

And for Herod, it’s never been about the money.

“No, heck no,” he chuckled.

Herod says he doesn’t plan on packing it in any time soon.

“I’ve still got another ten-years left in me. I know that’ll cheese the boys off downtown, but that’s the way it is.”
