MEDICINE HAT, AB — Police Point Park received a significant grant from the province Thursday afternoon.

Medicine Hat MLA Bob Wanner presented a donation of $71,400 to the Grasslands Naturalists, who operate the Nature Centre at Police Point Park. The money, from the province’s Climate Leadership Plan, will go towards helping enhance the existing school and community programs which are run out of the centre.

“I think part of the Climate Leadership Plan is clearly tied to education and information about the importance of our natural environment and the preservation of it,” said Wanner following the presentation.

“This is a real shot in the arm,” said Corlaine Gardner, chief park interpreter at the centre. “We’re always looking for money, because we run a very tight budget. We are also extremely pleased with the recognition of the importance of the work that we’re doing.”

Gardner says climate change is addressed in many of their programs they operate out of the Nature Centre, noting the focus is giving people advice about living responsibly alongside nature.

“If that means riding your bike, or planting native flowers, or enjoying the birds that come into your yard, and not squashing all of the caterpillars that are eating a little bit of your tree, then that’s all related to climate change, and just living well within the environment,” she said.

Gardner says Police Point Park is planning several programs for the summer, including preventing the spread of invasive species and protecting pollinators such as bees.
