Medicine Hat, AB – It may only be an audition, but it’s one that stay-at-home mom Candice Funk isn’t taking lightly.

Funk recently applied for the Great Canadian Baking Show and after receiving her email saying she got an audition, her journey begins now.

“I go to Edmonton on the 17th,” explained Funk. “I’m baking on the 15th, the day before we go so it’s all ready. When I arrive, I have to do a verbal interview and a thorough interview of myself as well. I’ll get some pictures done, meet some people and show off my signature bake and then do their technical challenge.”

Heading into her audition, Funk says she’s been baking up a storm and hasn’t decided what her signature dish is just yet.

“Yeast baking comes very naturally to me. I like working with dough. I do a lot of cinnamon buns, as that’s my go to for my family. I also like to make french macarons, that’s an enjoyable one for me. “

The show sifts through thousands of Canadian applications looking for the next best amateur baker.

Of the thousands that apply, only a selected few are contacted for auditions. From there, they will choose just 10 contestants to be on the show.

“Baking comes second-nature to me. I’m very excited for this challenge and that I get pushed out of my comfort zone because I’ve been baking for just over 20-years. I’m very comfortable with where I’m at now, but I need that next-level challenge.”

If Funk were to succeed and be selected to be on the show, she pointed out that the winner doesn’t actually receive anything spectacular.

“You get a glass serving bowl that says ‘Great Canadian Baker’,” she laughed.

For Funk though, it isn’t about the prizing.

“I bake for the enjoyment and if I were to make it there and even win, that would be amazing, but it’s not everything. It’s about the journey to me and getting the opportunity to have a different experience.”
