Tigers late push in Edmonton falls short, drop seventh straight

EDMONTON, AB – Mads Søgaard’s 41-save night wasn’t enough to prevent a seventh consecutive loss for the Medicine Hat Tigers in Edmonton on Friday evening.

Hayden Ostir pulled the Tigers to within a single goal against the Edmonton Oil Kings, but a third period push wasn’t able to erase a 4-2 road defeat.

Eight minutes into the game it was Edmonton blueliner Matthew Robertson banking a shot off Søgaard and in to open the scoring for the Oil Kings, who led 1-0 after a dominant first period outshooting the Tigers 14-5.

Medicine Hat was able to tie it up at 1-1 midway through the second period however, with Ryan Chyzowski netting his 21st of the season on the power play past Oil Kings goalie Dylan Myskiw.

That was followed up with a pair of Edmonton goals from Trey Fix-Wolansky and Vince Loschiavo, scoring back-to-back markers 1:17 apart to take a 3-1 lead.

Ostir was able to score his first goal since January 4 a little over seven minutes into the third period, closing the gap for Medicine Hat to a single goal.

Tigers coach Shaun Clouston pulled Søgaard with less than two minutes left in regulation, but it was Fix-Wolansky getting his second of the night with an empty net goal with nine seconds remaining to seal it.

Søgaard was named second star of the night, which was his first 40-save performance since a 41-save shutout over the Everett Silvertips on February 8.

Chyzowski recorded a goal and an assist in the loss, while Myskiw stopped 31 of the 33 shots he faced on Friday night for the Oil Kings.

Rookie Noah Danielson was a minus-one and had one shot on goal in his WHL debut, the same rink that AP call up Caleb Willms played in last week for his debut. Willms was also held scoreless on the night, finishing with a minus-one rating as well.

Medicine Hat’s tumble down the standings continued with the loss, now holding a 31-25-3-2 record and sit just one point ahead of the Brandon Wheat Kings for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with seven games left in the regular season.

The Tigers will try to prevent the losing skid from reaching eight games on Saturday night, when they return home to face the last place Swift Current Broncos at 7:30 pm.
