HALO airlifts woman to MHRH following Highway 41 collision

Hilda, AB – A woman has been transported to the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital (MHRH), following a collision on Highway 41 this morning.

The accident occurred around 10:00 a.m., between Hilda and the Empress Gas Plant, near Township Road 190.

Cypress County Deputy Fire Chief, John McBain was on-scene.

“The conditions were rough with blowing snow and limited visibility,” explained McBain. “From what we can tell, a car rear-ended a snowplow in white-out conditions.”

McBain said crews had to shut down Highway 41 in both directions for a brief period.

“There were no fatalities. EMS did transport the man from the car by ambulance, I think with very minor injuries. The woman from the vehicle was flown back by HALO. I’m not sure the extent of her injuries, but she was complaining about some back and neck pain. The man driving the snowplow was unharmed.”

Paul Carolan with HALO said the emergency crews on the ground did a phenomenal job.

“We were in a bit of a head-wind heading out there, so it took us a little longer to arrive than normal,” explained Carolan.  “On the way back, it was considerably quicker. We were on the heli-pad in roughly 23 minutes.”

Carolan described the roads this morning as ‘treacherous’, making it a priority for HALO to attend.

“It would’ve been roughly an hour on the ground for transport. The weather plays a bit of a factor for us, but the roads were the most-challenging part and that’s the piece that gets missed. If you have an injury and crews are having to travel on bad road conditions, the risk is high. Helicopters are much faster and more effective in these sorts of situations.”
