RED DEER, AB – Janick Lacroix is onto the next round at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, winning his first bout with Team Alberta on Sunday night.

Competing in the 75 kilogram event, the local boxer earned a first round decision by referee stoppage against Newfoundland & Labrador’s James Steven Thorne in his first preliminary match.

Lacroix, who is the defending national junior champion in his weight class, will now advance to the semi-finals which are scheduled to begin on Monday night.

Unfortunately for his Medicine Hat teammate Tristan Deveau, he fell in his 69 kilogram preliminary match to British Columbia’s Dylan Clark by a 4-1 judge decision and did not advance.

Team Alberta sits second in the Canada Winter Games medal standings trailing only Quebec, with four golds, five silvers, and two bronzes.

Medicine Hat long track speed skater Joshua Hathaway won one of those gold medals on Sunday afternoon, helping Team Alberta to a first place finish in the team pursuit competition.
