Travelodge Cubs sweep Wheatland Kings

MEDICINE HAT, AB — For the first time since 2013, the Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs have won a playoff series in the Heritage Junior Hockey League Playoffs.

The Cubs completed the sweep in Game 2 of a three game series Thursday night, topping the Strathmore Wheatland Kings 5-2 at the Kinplex to move on to the second round.

Tristan Stensrud scored twice, with Cooper Hilworth, Noah Irvine and Tavin Stadnicki each adding single goals through the game. Stadnicki’s goal was an empty net goal with seven seconds left in the game.

Goaltender Brett Vanderveer made 34 save on 36 shots during the game for the win. Wheatland Kings goaltender Brett Willan made 44 saves on 48 shots during the game.

The Cubs will face either the High River Flyers or the Cochrane Generals in the second round of the playoffs. The Generals topped the Flyers 11-2 on Thursday, and could sweep the series tonight in High River at 8 p.m. If a third game is needed, the two teams will play Sunday at 6 p.m.
