Live music scene growing, but still room for improvement

Medicine Hat, AB – Over the weekend, a couple local artists set up a performance at a coffee shop in town attempting to grow the music scene here in Medicine Hat,

Although it’s difficult to put a number on the growth of live music, these local performers say the future is bright in Medicine Hat, if residents decide to get out to support their neighbors.

“I think it’s growing a little bit,” said front-man of The Social Threat, Wade Hodgman. “Obviously I wish it would grow more. I think the culture in Medicine Hat is a little bit sleepy, you know stay at home, watch T.V kind of thing, but I think it’s growing and it would be awesome to see more and more people come out.”

Hodgman’s band released their new single ‘Too Far’ to Hatters on Saturday night.

“When we write, we usually look around and what’s happening in society and try to speak on that. This song focuses on the fact that you can disagree with someone and still love and respect them. A lot of the time nowadays people just hate on one another for their difference in opinions and that’s not what life is about.”

Curtis Windover is one of the operators at Fictional Bookings and set this show up.

“When I was growing up, there were a ton of all ages shows that we could attend as youth,” explained Windover.  “I wanted to pass that along to the younger generation now and showcase some of the great, local talent here from the area.”

Just like Hodgman, Windover said the live music scene is definitely growing, but there’s still room for improvement.

“Every town or city has to start somewhere. We can’t have world-class talent until we’ve established a scene. Over the past year, we’ve seen growth from 50-95 people at our shows and we certainly have had some memorable times.”

Windover then explained what keeps him going in this industry.

“We have a lot of hidden talent here. Not just musically, but artistically as well. I’ve made friends with some very talented people in Medicine Hat and I want to be able to show the world there’s good bands here, good people. It’s unbelievable.”
