EDMONTON, AB — RCMP in Alberta are investigating after multiple bomb threats were sent by email to businesses in Alberta on Thursday.

In a release sent late Thursday afternoon, the RCMP say the threats were reported in multiple communities. According to the release, the email threats are demanding payment in Bitcoin.

RCMP advise anyone who has received the threats to not respond to the demands. RCMP say investigations are ongoing, and they’re determining the origin and validity of the threats.

Calgary Police are also investigating 15bomb threats in their city on Thursday, which they determined were hoaxes.

“After a careful review of all the information available to us & liaising with other police agencies across North America we have determined the bomb threats received in #YYC today are a hoax,” a Tweet from the Service’s account reads. “We continue to investigate but are confident there is no threat to public safety.”

A post made by Constable Chris Martin with Calgary Police showed 15 places on a map that were targeted. Martin says the threats were part of a large-scale international phishing scam.

Multiple cities across Canada received similar threats, including Winnipeg, Ottawa and Toronto.
