Ed Horvath Classic off and running, U10 Ice Angels going for gold

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat U10 Ice Angels will have a shot at a medal, while the Medicine Hat Mudhens are the team to beat in the U16 A division at the 2018 Ed Horvath Interprovincial Classic.

Hundreds of minor ringette players hit the ice on Friday to kick off their respective tournaments, all in the hunt for gold medals on championship Sunday.

In the U10 Step 1 division however, gold will be battle for on Saturday afternoon between the local Ice Angels and the visiting Ice Wolves.

Medicine Hat began their tournament on Friday with a 7-0 shutout victory over the Airdrie Thundercats, before settling for a 2-2 tie against the Ice Wolves.

Closing out the round-robin on Saturday morning with an 8-5 victory over the Bow View Blue Unicorns, the 2-0-1 Ice Angels booked their place in Saturday’s championship game at the Kinplex at 3:45 pm.

It’s been a highly successful tournament so far for the U16 Mudhens as well, as they head in Saturday’s games with a perfect 2-0-0 record.

Medicine Hat took down the NorthWest RMBL 7-4 in their opener on Friday, with their second win of the tournament coming later that day 5-2 over the Bowview U16 A Surge.

Holding down top spot in the U16 A division, the Mudhens are back in action on Saturday afternoon against the BVRA Blaze out of Winnipeg at the Family Leisure Centre at 5:45 pm.

After suffering a pair of losses on Friday, the Medicine Hat Eliminators remain in sixth place in the U10 Step 3 division with a 0-2-0 record and will face the Northwest Nightmare on Saturday at the Kinplex.

Defence wasn’t all there for the U12 A Medicine Hat Surge, who allowed seven goals in both of their losses so far to the Bowview G-Force and Northwest Riot and sit with a 0-2-0 record.

It’s a winless record for the Medicine Hat Madness in the U12 B division also, suffering a 7-0 loss to the Calgary NW Rampage and a 9-2 defeat at the hands of the Airdrie Attitude on Friday.

The Medicine Hat Charge have their work cut out for them on Saturday, holding a 0-2-0 record in the U14 A division with blowout losses to NW Calgary-Invictus and NW Ignite.

In the U16 B division, the Medicine Hat Aftershock have gotten off to a slow start as well with two losses to their record courtesy of the Bowview Menace and Bowview Charge.

The Medicine Hat U19 A Wild earned a 5-1 victory in their opening game Friday against the U19 A Regina RIPT, but dropped back to a 1-1-0 record with a 6-2 loss to the Northwest Heat.

As for the Open B division meanwhile, the Medicine Hat Smash opened their tournament with a 6-3 doubling of the visiting Force squad.

However, two straight losses to the Calgary Absolut 4-3 and a 3-1 defeat from a visiting Lethbridge team has seen their record shrink to 1-2-0 through three games.

Ed Horvath Classic games continue across the city on Saturday, with finals planned throughout the morning and early afternoon on Sunday.
