GAME NOTES: Tigers try to end road slide against last place Broncos

Nov 17, 2018 | 11:12 AM

SWIFT CURRENT, SK – The Medicine Hat Tigers will look to prevent their eastern road swing from turning ugly on Friday night, paying a visit to the Swift Current Broncos.

Losing all three of their games on the road trip so far, the Tigers have earned just one point in their last five games and have fallen to a sub .500 record.

Coming off a 4-1 loss on Friday night against the Brandon Wheat Kings, Medicine Hat will be facing a struggling Broncos team that sits in the basement of the WHL with a 3-17-1-1 record.

Tigers vs. Broncos

Saturday will be the first meeting between the Tigers and the Broncos this season. The last time these two clubs met was Feb 17, 2018, when Ryan Jevne scored the overtime game-winning goal to seal a 4-3 victory for the Tigers. Over the past five years, Medicine Hat is 5-7-0-0 against Swift Current.

View from Swift Current

The Swift Current Broncos have had a slow start to their 2018-19 campaign. The reigning WHL Champions are 3-17-1-1 so far this season and they were defeated 3-0 by the Tri-City Americans in their most recent game on Wednesday night. The Broncos are led by veteran forwards Alec Zawatsky with 16 points (7G, 9A) and Max Patterson with 15 points (5G, 10A).

Tigers Talent

Baxter Anderson recently returned to the Tigers lineup after sustaining an upper-body injury and has been making his presence known. Anderson is a gritty, fearless forward in his second season with the Orange and Black. The 18-year-old Fort Langley, BC product is not afraid to mix it up and he is hoping to play a larger role on the Tigers team this season. Look for Anderson to agitate opponent’s as he helps create scoring lanes for the Tigers.

Captain’s Corner

Captain James Hamblin is a shifty forward with deceptive speed who leads the Tigers in points this season (9G, 15A). Hamblin has a great hockey sense and a tireless work ethic. He often leads the team by example by stepping up and consistently getting the job done. Hamblin is not afraid to battle for the puck, set his teammates up or find the back of the net himself. Look for the 19-year-old Edmonton native to drive to the net and create scoring opportunities Saturday for the Tabbies.

Quick Hits

For the second time in his WHL career, Jordan Hollett stopped 49 shots in a single game in Friday night’s contest against Brandon. The first time was Dec 6th, 2017, against the Prince Albert Raiders.

Josh Williams and Mads Sogaard have both been listed as B prospects on Central Scouting’s Players to Watch List while Ryan Chyzowski has been listed as a C prospect.

The Tigers continue their scoring by committee approach with 17 players scoring the team’s 68 goals. James Hamblin and Tyler Preziuso are leading the way with 9 goals each.

Despite only having 5 rookies this season, the Tigers are a young team with an average age of 18.27

Baxter Anderson scored his first goal of the 2018-19 campaign in Friday night’s contest against the Wheat Kings.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters Skate with the Tigers is Wednesday, November 21st from 7 to 8 PM at the Canalta Centre. Everyone is welcome.

The Annual Teddy Bear Toss is December 1st against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
