Cubs looking for answers to end six-game slide ahead of weekend

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A dream start to the season has quickly turned into a nightmare for the Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs.

Their losing streak was stretched to six games over the weekend after going undefeated in the pre-season and easily winning their season opener on September 22.

Medicine Hat’s most recent defeat came at the hands of the Ponoka Stampeders on Sunday, blowing a two-goal lead late to fall 4-3 in overtime.

Unlike last year, a lack of experience at the HJHL level isn’t to blame according to captain Quinten Karg.

“We’re still young, but I mean by now we thought things would be figured out,” said Karg. “But, I guess we’ll still just chip away at practice, working on things, finding line matches that work, and put things together.”

Medicine Hat has now fallen to last place in the Southern Division with a 1-4-2 record and have the second-worst goal differential in the league.

Two bright stops however has been the offensive contributions from first-year Cubs Chandler Aleman and Cooper Hilworth, who sit second and third in team scoring.

General manager Dave Kowalchuk said he’s been pleased with the contributions from rookies, but needs more out of his returning crop of players.

“I’m happy with a lot of the rookies because they’ve really been battling hard,” said Kowalchuk. “I am going to put a little more pressure on these vets to step it up, be a little more tougher and vocal in the room and on the bench, calm things down, and really get going.”

The Cubs will have their next chance at breaking the slide on Friday night, kicking off a busy weekend against the Cochrane Generals at 7:30 pm at the Kinplex.

They will then face the Mountainview Colts at home on Saturday night, before heading to Blackfalds on Sunday to tangle with the Wranglers.
