MEDICINE HAT, AB — Two-time All-Canadian Becky Martin is within striking distance of the CCAA National Golf Championship lead through the first round at Desert Blume GC.

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers golfer, who won the ACAC Provincial Championship individually last month, signed off on an opening round 77 on Tuesday to sit two shots back of leader Emily Romancew of John Abbott College.

Martin, who finished third in her previous national championship in 2016, went into the final five holes with the outright lead. The Hatter struggled down the stretch, bogeying four of her final five holes to settle for a tie for 2nd.

Sierra Zukowski, playing in her second national championship as a Rattler, sits 14th, while veteran Nicole Schultz is a few shots back in a tie for 15th.

Two-year Rattler Matt Taylor is the low local product on the men’s side, carding an opening round 75. The Medicine Hat Golf & Country Club member sits in a tie for 13th, five strokes back of leader Olivier Menard.

Menard has built a strong reputation around Medicine Hat’s golf scene. The Boomerang d’André-Laurendeau golfer also finished in a tie for 2nd at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship at the MHGCC in August. Menard’s opening round 70 gives him a one stroke lead heading into Wednesday.

First-year Rattlers Derek Whitland and Brady Resch sit 52nd and tied for 53rd respectively. Kent Lesko also heads into round two in a tie for 53rd, and Keaton Sulz is 57th individually.
