MEDICINE HAT, AB – Buckets rained down all night for the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Friday, kicking off the 2018-19 ACAC basketball season in style with an undefeated night.

In the opening game at the ‘Snake Pit’ on Friday evening, the Rattlers women’s basketball team got off to a 1-0 record with a 78-56 win over the visiting St. Mary’s University Lightning.

A rematch of last year’s ACAC final, the Rattlers relied on veteran guard Kendell Kuntz to lead the way with a team-high 21 point showing.

Kuntz hit five of her six three point attempts, while she was eight for 12 from the field in her return to the Rattlers lineup after suffering a late-season injury last year.

Jordyn Kearley and Katelyn Rozdeba both had strong performances with 16 and 12 points each, but it was Kiana Mitz off the bench that surprised with 10 points and four rebounds.

Scoring wasn’t much of an issue for the Rattlers men’s basketball team either, as they won their season opener easily 87-65 over the Lightning.

Rattlers returnee Jon Sappleton was a beast at the basket and on the boards, contributing 13 points and 21 rebounds for Medicine Hat in the win.

That wasn’t a game-high in points however, as guard Josh Magpantay went six for 12 from the field for 19 points, which included six three pointers.

Starter Jaamel Slack was able to get to double-digits in his Rattlers debut with 13 points, while Arthur Rosa and Brady Resch both hit double-digits off the bench.

Medicine Hat was clinical all evening on offence, shooting 42 percent from the field and going 14 of 29 from beyond the arc.

The Rattlers’ season opening weekend continues on Saturday, as the Olds College Broncos head down the highway for a pair of games.

Kicking things off on Saturday will be the women’s game at 6:00 pm, while the men will take to the court at 8:00 pm.
