TABER, AB – The path to provincials began on a good note for the Medicine Hat Can Pak Environmental Midget AA Hounds on Friday, opening their season with two points.

Medicine Hat scored a pair of goals in the second period to earn a 3-1 victory over the Taber Golden Suns on the road to get their 2018-19 SCAHL campaign underway.

The Hounds weren’t the first to hit the scoreboard however, as Taber’s Dallas Bodnar beat Hounds netminder Dawsen Savage with just under nine minutes to play in the first period.

Brady Dovichak erased that deficit for Medicine Hat with 6:29 left in the second frame, scoring his first of the season from Ryley Manz and Brandon Hauck to tie things up at 1-1.

Medicine Hat took their first lead of the season four minutes later, with Connor Miller scoring the eventual game-winning goal to give the Hounds a 2-1 lead at the intermission.

Former SEAC Tigers captain Caleb Irvine came through with an empty net goal with 19 seconds remaining in regulation, guaranteeing a season opening win for the Hounds squad.

Savage was bested only once on Friday, stopping 16 of the 17 shots he faced to earn his first victory of the year.

Medicine Hat continues their season opening road trip next weekend, visiting Lacombe’s Central Alberta Selects and the Red Deer Elks on October 6 and 7.
