MEDICINE HAT, AB — A company that owns and manages many rental units in Medicine Hat says the use and growing of cannabis will be prohibited on its properties once it’s legalized on October 17th.

Avenue Living released a statement on Thursday, saying they will prohibit the smoking and production of marijuana within all of its rental units.

“Avenue Living currently enforces a strict no-smoking policy for all of its properties, therefore the prohibition on smoking of marijuana will fall within this category,” the statement reads.

The news comes after Boardwalk, a company that owns several rental properties in Calgary and Edmonton, announced they would be banning cannabis use and growth in their units.

In its statement, Avenue Living says they took several factors into account when making their decision. The factors include second-hand smoke, nuisances caused by the presence of smoke such as smells, and “other undesirable effects on the peaceful enjoyment of other tenants in the property.”

For growing, the company says safety of the building was the primary concern.

Breaching the prohibitions would be considered a breach of the tenancy agreement, the company says.
