Bandits notch six power play goals in 7-3 win over Camrose

BROOKS, AB – Brandon Scanlin (Hamilton, ON) had two goals, and the Brooks Bandits (3-1) converted on six power plays, as the impending National Junior A Championship hosts extended their win streak to three games, downing the Camrose Kodiaks (1-3) by a 7-3 score at the Centennial Regional Arena.

The win moved the Bandits into a tie for first place in the AJHL South, with first place and 3-0 Calgary Mustangs holding a game in hand.

The night began with the induction of Bandit alumnus Anthony Petruzzelli (Federal Way, WA) into the team’s Smith Group Bandits Wall of Fame. The team’s third-highest goal scorer of all time, he joined Chad Johnson and Anthony Paskaruk in the alumni showcase, and was on hand to deliver remarks to an appreciative Brooks crowd.

It took the Bandits just 37 seconds to open the scoring when Scanlin wired home a slap shot from the right circle on the man advantage. Just over two minutes later, Simon Boyko (Mississauga, ON) scored on a wraparound goal to double the Bandits lead and chase goalie Luke Lush from the game, who was replaced by backup Roddy Ross.

Shortly thereafter, Camrose cut the deficit in half when Kyler Kupka scored from the slot, but just over two minutes after that, Scanlin scored an almost identical goal to his first, a power-play one-timer from the right circle, to make it 3-1.

The game then saw three goals scored on consecutive shifts. William Lemay (Marieville, QC) scored on the power play when his centering pass from the right side of the net went off a Camrose stick and in behind goaltender Ross. After the ensuing faceoff, Carson Welke poked a puck home from the slot for Camrose, and on the very next shift, Colson Gengenbach fed a cross-crease pass to Kupka that he hammered home for his second of the game to make it 4-3.

As narrow as the first period was, the second was dominated by Brooks, which outshot the Kodiaks 17-0 to start the period and 26-4 overall in the frame, converting twice, both on their two power plays of the period. The first was a Jakob Lee (Owen Sound, ON) shot from the slot, and the second a Ryan Mahshie (Stoney Creek, ON) backhand shot from the slot off a net front scramble.

In the third, the Bandits added one for good measure when Nathan Plessis (Salmon Arm, B.C.) wristed one home from the slot, again on the power play, at the 7:34 mark.

Bandit goalie Pierce Charleston (Aurora, ON) made 24 saves on 27 shots as the Bandits outshot Camrose 51-27, going 6 for 10 on the power play and a perfect 5 for 5 on the penalty kill.
