MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Canalta Centre is going local for alcohol partners starting this year.

Tammy Sweeney, general manager of the Canalta Centre, announced on Wednesday that they will begin selling beer from Hell’s Basement Brewery and the Medicine Hat Brewing Company at events starting this year.

In addition to the beer, the building will also be selling hard liquor from Grit City Distillery, which will be opening this fall.

“I’m such a firm believer in supporting the community, and this is a community centre that is all about boosting everything about Medicine Hat,” Sweeney said. “If we can support local businesses while we’re in here, it’s good for business, it’s good for Medicine Hat, and it’s good for our guests to be able to support that as well.”

Sweeney adds Molson, which has a deal already in place for beer sales, will continue to sell its products at the Canalta Centre. The local craft beer will be sold in the Co-op Club area of the building.

Grit City will be providing gin and vodka once it opens to the Canalta Centre, with rum and whisky coming in one and three years, respectively. Co-owner Jen Schmunk says the partnership with the Canalta Centre is huge for a new business.

“Getting our foot in the door is a large, large part of it,” she said. “Having this community support has been very humbling. We never thought we’d have such support from Medicine Hat, but it’s been incredible.”

The two breweries will be available for purchase at the Canalta Centre during the Medicine Hat Tigers’ home opener. Grit City products are expected to arrive in the middle of October.
