Former MP Bob Porter passes away

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A longtime rancher and former Member of Parliament for the region has passed away.

Bob Porter passed away on Monday, according to an obituary posted by Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel. He was 85 years old.

The Porter family have been ranching in the region since 1883.

In 1984, he was elected as Member of Parliament for the Medicine Hat riding with the Progressive Conservative Party. He was re-elected in the 1988 election, but left federal politics in 1993.

In 2010, Porter was awarded an honourary degree from Medicine Hat College, and in 2016, he served as honourary parade marshal for the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede parade.

Porter’s funeral will take place on Sunday in Medicine Hat.
