Quinney scores winner, Bandits down Dragons in shootout

DRUMHELLER, AB – The Brooks Bandits extended their pre-season record to 5-0, as Landon Quinney (Las Vegas, NV) had his fourth-round shootout goal stand up as the winner in a 4-3 win over the Drumheller Dragons on the road Friday night.

The Bandits outshot the Dragons 34-31 in the game, with Max Wright (Waterloo, ON) making 28 saves for the victory. Hunter Virostek stopped 31 of 34 for the home side.

Drumheller opened the scoring at the 16:29 mark when Brayden Nicholetts chopped home a rebund from the right side of the Brooks net. But just over two minutes later, Nathan Plessis (Salmon Arm, B.C.) sniped home a wrister on a breakaway to tie the game up heading into the first intermission.

In the second, the Dragons retook the lead only 18 seconds in on a Shane Ott breakaway goal, but again the Bandits quickly responded, 58 seconds later, when a Plessis shot was directed in by Bobby Harrison (Waterdown, ON) to put the visitors back even.

In the third, it was Brooks that took its first lead of the night when Jordan Di Cicco (London, ON) fired a slap shot from the blue line in through traffic at the 1:21 mark. But with the goalie pulled and a late power play, the Dragons forced overtime with just 45 seconds left in the game when Jordan Taupert wristed one in from the slot.

Overtime solved nothing with Wright making several key saves as Brooks was outshot 5-1 in the extra frame.

As the game headed to the shootout, both goalies went a perfect 3-for-3 in the opening rounds, requiring extra time. Eric Martin of the Dragons was forced to shoot wide by a sprawling Wright, setting up Quinney who hesitated and swept a low shot between Virostek’s pads and in to give the Bandits the dramatic road win.

Brooks will cap off its exhibition schedule on Saturday night, hosting the Dragons at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available online at tickets.brooksbandits.ca.
