33rd annual Irvine Rodeo is for the kids

IRVINE, AB — Cowboys and cowgirls gathered in Irvine on Labour Day weekend for their 33rd annual rodeo.

Luarry Trossman, rodeo president, started the rodeo 33 years ago and says the amount of support he receives from the community every year is the reason why the rodeo takes place every year.

“Our sponsors and the support of this town, come every year. Same people every time and some outsiders, but it’s the people here that live in our community, (and) Medicine Hat that support this rodeo,” said Trossman.

Adults and their children had the opportunity to participate in a variety of events, including barrel racing and calf roping.

The event is a part of the Border Country Rodeos which aren’t as expensive to partake in.

With the lower costs, Trossman says the rodeos are designed to have as much participation as possible.

“Border Country was set up for the young kids to come and have fun,” said Trossman. “Learn how to ride, rope, and everything else.”

Trossman says they need the kids to be interested because these rodeos won’t be around in the future without them.

“Here it’s local, close and it’s really easy for these young kids to get a start,” said Trossman. “Cause without these young kids coming up, there will be no more rodeos.”

The Irvine rodeo is one of six remaining rodeos in the Border Country circuit.
