MEDICINE HAT, AB — It’s a sure sign the fall is almost here.

High school football practices have already started around the city, with the Medicine Hat Mohawks taking to the field earlier this week.

The Mohawks, who won the South Zone Championship last year, have more than 20 players from Grade 11 last year making the return to the team. The team also features several younger players looking to make an impact in the season.

Among them are Elic Ayomanor and Piercen Meier, who are making the jump to the senior team in their Grade 10 year.

Anthony Hullah, a Grade 11 student, is also returning for his second year as a defensive back.

During the summer, all three represented Team Alberta in several football clubs., with Hullah and Meier representing the U-17 team, which included a trip to Hawaii to take on a few high school teams. Ayomanor was among the players who was named to the U16 Team.

All three players are ready for the season to begin.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” said Hullah. “The team’s really strong, we all really have a good connection.”

“I played a lot of football this summer, so I got a lot of practising in, so I’m pretty confident that I’m up at that level,” said Meier.

“It’s good that a lot of these people are dedicated to our team becoming way better as a group,” said Ayomanor. “I think that will help us take our game to the next level this year.”

Quinn Skelton returns as head coach of the Mohawks for his 29th season, and he says he’s excited for how far the team can go this season.

“The off-season work that our guys have put in sinc eliterally last January at (Badlands) Underground, working with the trainers down there, and in the summer here as well, they’re all keen and just excited about getting at it,” he said.

The Mohawks begin their main camp this weekend, with their first exhibition game set for Sept. 1.
