EDMONTON, AB – Redemption for Medicine Hat Tigers forward Josh Williams, as he can now call himself a champion with Team Canada.

Williams scored early in the third period against Sweden on Saturday night to help clinch a 6-2 victory for Canada to win gold at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

The Langley, B.C. native was one of the breakout stars for Canada at the U18 tournament this week, finding the back of the net five times in five games to finish tied for second in tournament goal scoring.

He also added an assist to end his tournament with six points, which was fourth-best amongst all Canadians.

It’s Williams’ first international gold medal after missing last year’s World U17 Hockey Challenge with a broken collarbone.

Slated to join the Tigers again for training camp in a matter of weeks, the draft-eligible Williams is posted for a breakout sophomore campaign in Medicine Hat after scoring 11 goals and 20 points in 47 games last year.

Russia meanwhile earned the bronze medal, thanks to a hat-trick on Saturday from Tigers import draft pick Vasili Podkolzin.

Generating buzz from around the hockey community with a handful of highlight-reel goals, Podkolzin led all skaters with eight goals and 11 points in five games.

Selected in the second round of this summer’s CHL Import Draft, Podkolzin has not signed a contract with the Tigers and it’s not yet known if he’ll play in Russia or Medicine Hat this fall.

Canada has now won gold at the annual tournament for three straight years and have captured top spot 22 times since 1991.
