Mavericks double up Bombers to win 32nd game of season

BROOKS, AB – A late charge Saturday against the Brooks Bombers has secured another two points in the standings for the Medicine Hat Mavericks.

Medicine Hat took advantage of some shaky Bombers pitching on the mound to double up Brooks 10-5 to take the first two games of their weekend series.

After Brooks held a 3-2 lead after the fourth inning, Medicine Hat’s offence woke up in the fifth with runs from Carson Johnson and Nolan Rattai.

The Mavericks really broke the game open in the seventh, extending their 4-3 lead to a four-run advantage as Sal Rodriguez and Jordan Dray came through with RBIs before a wild pitch brought Rodriguez around to score.

Brooks scored a run in the bottom of the seventh from Conner Morro to close the deficit to 7-4, but Medicine Hat put the final nail in the coffin the following inning.

Johnson and Rodriguez again reached base bringing in a trio more runs for the Mavericks, eventually taking Saturday’s contest by a 10-5 final.

Medicine Hat starter Junior Pimentel had an excellent outing to move to 2-1 on the season, posting six strikeouts while allowing just three earned runs in six innings of work.

Many of the Mavericks runs on Saturday came as a result of pass balls or walks, with Medicine Hat’s only three RBIs on the evening coming from Johnson, Rodriguez, and Dray.

Winning their 32nd game of the season, the Mavericks are just seven wins away from tying the WMBL single-season wins record set back in 2013 by Medicine Hat as well.

With eight games left in the season, Medicine Hat wraps up their three-game set with Brooks on Sunday afternoon at Athletic Park.

Kicking off their final home stand before playoffs, opening pitch is scheduled for 2:05 pm.
