MEDICINE HAT, AB — Two weeks from now, some of the best young golfers in the country will be descending on Medicine Hat.

The Canadian Junior Boys Golf Championship will run July 30-August 2 at the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club.

“It’s bigger than I thought it would be,” said course manager Cam Jacques. “I mean, 156 players, it’s kind of interesting taking phone calls in the pro shop for the last couple of days, having people book their practice round from Halifax, and Vancouver and Montreal, and some French-speaking people. They’re converging on Medicine Hat, and it’s not just 156 boys, it’s 156 families.”

The players will deal with some extremely fast greens and a very thick rough, which is different from the usual at the club.

But, even though the playing conditions are difficult, there could be a home course advantage for the two local players who made the cut.

Ryan Hodgins and  Caleb Kinch both qualified for the championship this year. Hodgins has had a breakout year on the links, winning the Alberta Juvenile Championship and notching victories in several other tournaments.

Jacques is impressed to some local flavour among Canada’s best.

“They play lots of tournament golf,” he said. “I’m sure they might have a little bit of deer in the headlights at first, but they play a lot of tournament golf all over Alberta, B.C. and other places. I think this is going to be a wonderful experience for them.
