MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Mavericks proved to be super on Saturday night, vanquishing the Fort McMurray Giants 10-5 to split their double-header.

Medicine Hat powered 10 runs past the Giants over the opening three innings, finishing the evening with 12 hits to get back in the win column on ‘Superhero Night’ in support of the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Zack Gray kicked off the scoring barrage in the first inning with an RBI single to score David Salgueiro from second base.

The Mavericks began to stretch things out in the second inning with back-to-back RBI doubles from Julien Ly and David Vilches, before Salgueiro pitched in with a triple to make it 4-0

Medicine Hat scored three more runs in the inning thanks to a Giants error, a walk with the bases loaded, and another RBI from Gray to hop ahead 7-0 heading to the third.

Catcher Colton Wright then joined in on the action with a triple to score a pair of runs, before he was brought home off the barrel of Gray for his third RBI of the night.

Fort McMurray picked up their first runs of the evening in the seventh inning, scoring a pair from a Tristan Richardson double and a wild pitch from Mavericks starter Matt Brooks.

That would spell the end of Brooks’ evening, who pitched seven strong innings for Medicine Hat with just one earned run given up on seven hits and six strikeouts.

Giants pinch hitter was able to take Medicine Hat’s Nathan Stark yard in the eighth inning with a three-run homer, but Medicine Hat was able to limit the damage from there to win by a 10-5 final.

Gray ended up being the straw that stirred the drink for the Mavericks on Saturday night, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a trio of RBIs.

Medicine Hat now moves to 28-6 on the season and are now 2-1 in their four-game home set against Fort McMurray.

That series comes to a close on Sunday afternoon, as the Mavericks face the Giants for the final time in the regular season.

Opening pitch at Athletic Park is tabled for 2:05 pm.
