CYPRESS COUNTY, AB — A fire tore through a business outside of Medicine Hat city limits on Friday.

Members of the Cypress County Fire Service, including crews from Dunmore, Walsh and Box Springs, were called to the blaze at Jayman Metals at 11:30 a.m.

John McBain, deputy fire chief with Cypress County, says a tank in the building ignited while people were working inside.

One worker was treated on scene for minor injuries.

John Belanger, director of emergency management with the county, says it took several hours to get the fire under control.

“The fire was under control by 2 p.m.,” he said. “An excavator was deployed to knock down the remainder of the building, and Dunmore station remained on site to ensure there was no flare ups.”

Shortly after crews got the fire at Jayman under control, they responded to a grass fire on Highway 41 and Township road 112, which was extinguished by 3 p.m.

Both McBain and Belanger say the Jayman Metals building was a complete loss.
