PM TRUDEAU EXTENDS MISSION IN LATVIA

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that Canada is extending its NATO commitment in Latvia by another four years. Trudeau is in Latvia on the eve of the NATO summit in Brussels. The longer mission will boost the number of troops in the country to 540 from the current 455 in a show of ongoing solidarity with the alliance.

BRONCOS CRASH TRUCKER IN COURT TODAY

A truck driver who was arrested last week in connection with a crash that killed 16 people on the Humboldt Broncos team bus will appear in court in Saskatchewan today. Jaskirat Sidhu, 29, is charged with 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death and 13 counts of dangerous driving causing bodily injury. Sidhu was not injured in the crash at a rural Saskatchewan intersection on April 6 as the hockey team was headed to a playoff game.

RURAL REGIONS HIT HARD BY GREYHOUND MOVE

The end of Greyhound bus service in western Canada is the latest decision that has left many rural residents with few options for public transportation. The southern Prairies lost Via Rail service in 1990, followed by Greyhound cuts, such as in 2012, when the company stopped operating on a number of roads including Highway 2 in Manitoba. Now, Greyhound end all its routes in the West, save for one between Vancouver and Seattle, at the end of October.

WILDFIRES RAGE IN NORTHEAST ONTARIO

Residents of Temagami, Ont., are in evacuation notice and two provincial parks have been emptied as wildfires spread across areas of northeastern Ontario. Temagami residents were put on notice Monday after 20 homes were evacuated Sunday as fires approached the town. As of Monday morning, there were 70 forest fires in the northeast region with 33 of them not yet under control. Ontario will be getting reinforcements from other provinces to join 400 firefighters currently working the northeast quadrant.

POLICE TO UPDATE PROBE INTO ONTARIO TEEN’S DEATH

Police will give update their investigation today into the death of a pregnant teen whose remains were found east of Toronto. A fisherman discovered a torso in Lake Ontario in September 2017 that police linked by DNA testing to 18-year-old Rori Hache of Oshawa, Ont. Regional police charged Adam Strong, 45, with indecent interference to a body in connection with the discovery of Hache’s remains.

MAN WHO LET MOTHER DIE ON FLOOR TO BE SENTENCED

A Winnipeg man who left his 89-year-old mother on the floor of their home, covered in her own feces and urine until she died, is scheduled to be sentenced today. Local musician Ronald Siwicki pleaded guilty in January to criminal negligence causing the death of his mother Elizabeth, who suffered from dementia. The Crown is seeking a 35-month sentence, while the defence wants a suspended sentence with probation.

BIEBER ENGAGED

Canada pop superstar Justin Bieber has confirmed his engagement to American model Hailey Baldwin. The 24-year-old singer from Stratford, Ont., confirmed the news on Instagram Monday with a post that included a photo of Baldwin kissing him. Rumours have been swirling since the weekend that the pair got engaged in the Bahamas. Baldwin, 21, is the daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin.
