MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Sun Devils will be fighting for their season on Sunday at the Kinplex after losing their playoff opener on Saturday against the Calgary Axemen.

Medicine Hat dropped a 16-14 decision to the Axemen in Game 1 of their best-of-three series and now face elimination in their opening round of playoffs.

After the Sun Devils picked up a 3-2 lead in the first period, the Axemen potted four straight goals to take a 6-4 lead into the intermission.

Izaak Loran led the charge in the second period for the Sun Devils to give the team an 11-10 lead over Calgary, but the Axemen had the better final frame to win the playoff opener 16-14.

Loran had one of his best offensive games of the season in the loss, finding the back of the net six times and recording eight points.

Veteran Tanner Simpson meanwhile had a hat-trick and four points, while it was a four-point night for Daniel Drefs as well.

Facing elimination against the Axemen, the Sun Devils welcome Calgary for Game 2 at 11:00 am at the Kinplex in a must win situation.

If Medicine Hat is able to win Game 2 and tie up the series, a 10-minute mini-game will be played at 1:10 pm to decide who will advance to the High River Heat in the next round.
