MEDICINE HAT, AB – A facility used by many groups inside of Kin Coulee Park will soon be getting a makeover, thanks to the city and province.

Medicine Hat MLA Bob Wanner recently awarded a Community Facility Enhancement Program grant totalling $125,000 to the Kinette Club of Medicine Hat, a total matched by the City of Medicine Hat. The money will be put towards renovating Kinette Korner in the park.

“We were very, very excited,” said Raquel Hepworth with the Kinettes. “This is something we have been working on for years, even before I became a member of the club. It was very exciting for us.”

Kinette Korner can be rented for cooking and community events in the park. Hepworth says the facility is long overdue for modernization, following an examination of the space by the city.

“What they were finding was that people who were renting out the space, they weren’t able to see children playing at the park,” she said. “The picnic tables were spread out and not really attached. If the weather was bad, everyone was inside. The building is quite outdated, a lot of times there wasn’t even hot water for it.”

Hepworth adds the club is still working to finalize what the renovations will look like, but says the space will become more accessible, with new picnic tables, barbecues and washrooms. She adds the building will have new, larger windows and a gazebo picnic area that attaches to the building.

Hepworth says work is expected to begin in the fall.
