Mavericks launch three home runs in victory over Prospects

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Mavericks struck early and often against the Edmonton Prospects on Friday night, winning their 13th straight contest by a 13-7 score.

Eight members of the Mavericks drove in runs to earn the win against Edmonton, while Colton Wright, Sal Rodriguez, and Reed Odland all launched long balls against the Prospects.

Carson Johnson got the festivities started in the first inning with an RBI single to score David Salgueiro, before Nolan Rattai knocked in Johnson shortly after with a ground out.

Rodriguez capped off a three-run opening inning with an RBI single to cash Colton Wright, putting the Mavericks comfortably into the lead.

Medicine Hat boosted their lead to 4-0 in the third inning with a double from Rodriguez, while Julien Ly smacked a triple to the outfield to bring home two more runs for the home side.

Up 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Wright stepped to the plate and got a hold of the fourth pitch he saw for his fifth home run of the season to make it 7-0.

In the fifth inning, Odland stepped into the spotlight with a three-run shot to put the Mavericks ahead by double-digits 10-0 on the Prospects.

Edmonton found the scoreboard in the sixth inning courtesy of a single from Jake MacDonald, bringing Nick Spillman and Anthony Cusati home for a pair of runs.

Rodriguez, who finished his night a triple short of the cycle, launched a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning to extend Medicine Hat’s lead back to 10 runs.

Not long after, Michael Conn singled to score Ly from second base to bring the Mavericks lead to 12-1.

Despite trailing by a significant margin, Edmonton came alive in the top of the seventh inning with four runs to close the chasm to 12-5, before Louie Canjura responded with an RBI single of his own.

The Prospects added another run in the ninth inning, but Medicine Hat rolled to a 13-7 victory to extend their win streak.

Starter Alex Dafoe threw into the sixth inning to improve his record on the season to 4-0, allowing no earned runs while striking out six.

Rodriguez was 3-for-4 at the plate with a trio of RBIs, while Odland also had his best offensive performance of the year with three RBIs.

Extending their lead in the West Division to six and a half games, the 23-3 Mavericks continue their home stand against the Prospects on Saturday night at 7:05 pm.
