MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Mavericks can lay claim to the title of the ‘cardiac kids’ of the WMBL, shocking the Weyburn Beavers for the second straight night at Athletic Park.

Medicine Hat eliminated deficits of three runs in the ninth inning and one run in the 10th to secure a 6-5 extra innings victory over Weyburn with a literal ‘walk-off’ win.

After a slow start to the game from both sides, rain fell in the top of the second inning to force a half an hour rain delay.

Once returning to the field, there was very little offence from either side as it was a scoreless game into the sixth inning.

With the bases loaded and one out, Jaymon Cervantes got Drake Pilat to ground out to shortstop Carson Johnson but one run came around to open the scoring for the Beavers.

Two batters later, Keaton Greenwalt knocked in Felix Correa from second base to extend Weyburn’s lead to a pair of runs.

Cervantes would get the yank for Barry Caine after giving up just two earned runs on three hits, while striking out three Beavers batters.

Correa added onto Weyburn’s offence with a single in the seventh inning, cashing Corey Wheaton and Anthony Galindo to double their lead to 4-0.

Medicine Hat finally got their first run of the game in the bottom of the seventh, as Jaxson Hooge found the gap for an RBI single to bring home Michael Conn.

Down by three runs in the bottom of the ninth, Hooge stepped up with a clutch hit and delivered a two-run RBI triple to make it a one run game.

Medicine Hat tied things up two batters later, as Carson Johnson drifted one to right field for a sacrifice fly to knot the game up at 4-4.

Rolling with two outs in the top of the 10th, Mavericks newcomer Ryan Czanstkowski allowed an RBI double from Greenwalt to bring home Correa, who slid under the tag from Mavericks catcher Colton Wright.

Needing another rally, Medicine Hat’s Nolan Rattai was able to come through with a double to get a man in scoring position with one out.

Following Rattai, Louie Canjura smacked a hard hit ball to right field to bring Rattai home and tie up the game once again at 5-5.

Back-to-back walks loaded up the bases for Julien Ly in a position to drive in the winning run, but even after a pitching change he faced a 3-1 count at the plate.

Ly watched as a ball passed away from the dish, allowing a third straight walk with the bases loaded in extra innings to give Medicine Hat an incredible 6-5 win.

Leading the team with three RBIs, Hooge was the standout at the plate with a pair of hits to his name as well

Extending their double-digit win streak to 12 games, the Mavericks improve to 22-3 on the season and are now seven and a half games up on the Okotoks Dawgs for first in the West Division.

Sweeping their two-game set with Weyburn, Medicine Hat continues their home stand with games this weekend against the Edmonton Prospects.

The opening game of the series will be played on Friday night at Athletic Park, while first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
