MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat will soon have a daily outdoor market to shop at all summer.

The Rite Downtown Farmers Market is two weeks away from opening .It will be located on Second Street Southeast, in the former location of the Rite Downtown Garden Centre.

“We went on the CCDA Facebook page, and we asked the general public ‘If there was an empty spot downtown, what would you put on it?’” said Jeremy Silver, manager of the market and chair of the City Centre Development Agency. “Overwhelmingly, I’d say about 70 per cent of the responses were some sort of outdoor summer market.”

Silver approached Kelly and John Devine, the landowners for the garden centre and market, who were on board with the idea.

The market will open for business on July 3. The market would run daily from Noon- 8 p.m., with extended hours on Friday nights, where the back gates of the market will open and expand.

Silver says he’s working to attract vendors interested in setting up at the market, and notes the Lev Zohar with the Breaking Bad Foods has signed up to sell baked bread at the market. Application information can be found on the market’s Facebook page.

“Our goal is to have fruit, vegetables and fresh, baked bread for sale every day downtown from noon until 8 p.m.,” he said.

Silver adds he’s hopeful residents and downtown businesses will help make the market successful.

“What I would like to see is, and what I’m hoping is that the downtown business owners start staying open late, maybe Thursdays and Fridays, to complement the market, and turn downtown into one big farmers’ market every Friday night,” he said.

The space will also hold a satellite office for Tourism Medicine Hat for people to rent bicycles from.

A grand opening will take place on July 6.
