LETHBRIDGE, AB — The Lethbridge Hurricanes have confirmed one of their players is in a medically-induced coma following an incident involving involving a campfire on Friday.

In a statement, the team says Ryan Vandervlis is in critical condition in a Calgary hospital. VandervIis and teammate Jordy Bellerive, along with WHL alumni Matt Alfaro, were injured at a campfire in Cochrane. All three remain in the hospital. Bellerive and Alfaro remain in stable condition.

“We are grateful and overwhelmed by the amount of love and support we have received and pray that Ryan will make a full recovery,” said the Vandervlis family in a statement.

The family added alcohol was not a factor in the incident.

The team says the fire occurred at the home of former Hurricane Tyler Wong the night before a planned day of golf, and say the initial reports of the incident being a bachelor party are inaccurate.

“We are earnestly praying for three of Tyler’s closest friends – Ryan, Jordy and Matt – along with their families, for comfort and healing during this time of hurt,” the Wong Family wrote in a statement.
