MEDICINE HAT, AB — With two out and the bases loaded in the seventh inning, David Vilches sent it flying into the warning track.

Neither Okotoks Dawgs outfielders snagged it on the fly, sending three Medicine Hat Mavericks home, Vilches to third, and the game out of reach for the visiting team.

Medicine Hat went on to secure a critical 11-6 victory in a battle for first place in the WMBL’s Western Division with the Dawgs at Athletic Park, upping their win streak to eight games. The Mavs haven’t lost since their home opener on June 4th, running the table since to boast an 8-2 record.

Okotoks falls to 7-3, one game back of Medicine Hat and in second place in the West. These two will duel it out again Thursday night at Athletic Park (7:05 p.m.).

Vilches, new to the Mavericks fold for 2018, brought in five RBI on two hits, while Louie Canjura went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Both teams finished with 10 hits, with Okotoks collecting three errors, two of which in a seventh inning that proved to be the difference maker.

The Mavericks scored five following the seventh inning stretch; three of which on Vilches crack into centre-left field, and the other two coming off Dawgs errors. All five runs in the seventh came with two out.

David Salgueiro stole a pair of bases in the eighth inning, leading to one of his three runs on the night to stretch the Mavericks lead to five. The Miami-native also forced three walks.

Evan Sutta started his second game for the Mavericks, lasting four-2/3 innings and allowing six hits and four runs. Barry Caine relieved the Miami-product of his duties in the fifth, going two-2/3 innings with three hits and one earned run to his name.

Nate Dechaine and Richard Mascarenias each batted in a pair of runs for the Dawgs, who led on three separate occasions.

Brock Townsend started this one off for the Dawgs and lasted four innings. He allowed six hits, five runs and tallied two strikeouts.

This is the second time the Mavericks have topped the Dawgs, having defeated Okotoks in their first victory of the season. The pups cleaned up Medicine Hat in their home-opener on June 2nd at Seaman Stadium.
