INTERVIEW: Coach Murphy explains Mavs latest offensive surge

Jun 11, 2018 | 5:27 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Andrew Murphy was in awe as he watched his team erupt for 12 runs in Friday night’s first inning.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks connected on 10 consecutive hits, simply unheard of in the WMBL, especially considering nearly every player is adjusting to a wood-bat requirement. That 12-run ramshackle led the Mavs to a 23-3 victory over the Moose Jaw Miller Express, who were undefeated heading into the weekend at 6-0.

While much of the southern half of Alberta dealt with winds eclipsing 100 km/h, the Miller Express were enduring another brutal beat-down by the Gas City phenoms. Several weather delays didn’t stifle the Mavs hot bats, leading to a 14-4 victory to finish off the weekend sweep.

The Mavericks now boast the most runs and RBI’s in the entire WMBL, despite playing two fewer games than several teams in the league. They’ve also reached double-digits in scoring in three consecutive games.

Medicine Hat now holds a 5-2 record after opening the summer with back-to-back losses. They enjoyed their first day-off in a week on Sunday, spending the early afternoon on the golf course, without so much as touching a baseball.

They return to action Monday evening, hosting the Brooks Bombers — a make-up to their home opener, which was called off on May 31st due to persistent rainfall.

Mitch Bach of CHAT Sports caught up with Murphy ahead of Monday’s clash to learn where the Mavs unruly offence is coming from, ways the team can keep it going, the recent performance out of their starting rotation, and what to expect out of a Bombers team that’s lost three straight heading into Monday.

Jaymon Cervantes releases the Mavericks first pitch against Brooks at 7:05 p.m. at Athletic Park.
