MEDICINE HAT, AB – Numerous power outages have been reported across Medicine Hat as a severe thunderstorm rolls through the city.

According to the City of Medicine Hat, they’re estimating 6,747 residents are without power as a result of the storm.

The Electric Utilities department confirmed through a voice mail that outages are occurring in the Flats and downtown core, while those CHAT News reached out to on Facebook said many of the outages are coming south of the South Saskatchewan River.

People from the Southeast and Southwest Hill, Crestwood, Southridge, Connaught, Kingsway, and Norwood neighbourhoods are all reporting outages along with other areas in the city.

There is no word yet on what is causing the outages, but the City has confirmed they have crews out trying to restore power to affected neighbourhoods.

Residents are being asked to stay 10 metres away from any downed power lines as they may be still live and to give City crews room to work.

Any traffic lights that are flashing red are also to be treated as four-way stops until power is restored.

Anyone experiencing an outage is asked to call the City’s emergency utilities line at 403-526-2828 and are encouraged to call back and remain patient if the line is busy.

Along with Medicine Hat, the communities of Bow Island, Whitla, Redcliff, Bowell, Bowmanton, Hilda, Schuler, Dunmore, Woolchester, Irvine, Walsh, Seven Persons, Tide Lake, and CFB Suffield are also under a severe thunderstorm warning from Environment Canada.

These areas were previously under a severe thunderstorm watch, while warnings have ended for the communities of Tilley, Rolling Hills, and Suffield.

Environment Canada is encouraging people to stay inside during severe thunderstorms and to report severe weather to Abstorm @canada.ca or tweet with the hashtag #ABStorm.
