Tennis Club hosting Junior Championship Saturday

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The top junior tennis players in the Gas City are ready to compete this weekend.

The Medicine Hat Tennis Club is hosting its Junior Championship on Saturday, and club manager Ken Clement says numbers this year are at an all-time high, with between 30 and 35 players taking part.

“It’s a bit of a surprise,” he said. “We’ve traditionally had it at the end of August, and we thought we’d try it closer to the end of school, and it’s been great.”

Clement said it made sense to move the tournament two months earlier. With only a couple of weeks left in the school year, more young players are still in town and not on vacation.

The event also lines up with the club’s junior lessons and tennis clinics, allowing the tournament to act as a final wrap-up for those who took part.

“We’re hoping what’s going to happen now is that it will spur the kids to keep playing,” said Clement. “It may very well be that we may have a June tournament for the kids and another August tournament if demand warrants.”

The Junior Championship isn’t the only tournament the club is hosting in June. Starting on June 13, the Barry Shave Memorial Classic Doubles Tournament returns for its 20th anniversary. The championship game will take place June 17.
