MEDICINE HAT, AB — Fire investigators have wrapped up their investigation looking into what started the house fire on Cypress Way SE earlier this week.

Emergency crews were called to Cypress Way at Cairns Way around 7:30 Tuesday night.

The garage was fully engulfed and the flames were quickly spreading to the rest of the home.

Fire Chief Brian Stauth said the cause has been deemed incendiary in nature, adding two youths were home at the time and had poured gasoline onto the floor and were flicking matches at it.

Stauth is reminding parents to educate their kids about the dangers around fire and that it isn’t something to be played with.

“One of the things we would urge everyone is safe storage of fuels, so in a proper jerry can, stored out of reach of children and preferably outside in a storage shed of some kind,” he said.

A damage total is still being calculated, but fire officials have estimated it’s around $250,000.
