MEDICINE HAT, AB — The City of Medicine Hat is encouraging residents to save power throughout the month of July as part of the power down challenge.

From July 1st to 31st, homeowners taking part in the challenge will try and reduce their energy consumption by five per cent or more.

Jaret Dickie with the city said to help, homeowners can take advantage of the Hat Smart program and intensives offered through Energy Efficiency Alberta to help reduce the energy used in their homes.

He adds it can be as simple as turning off a light switch.

“Converting incandescent bulbs to LED bulbs, things like that,” he said. “Turning your thermostat up slightly when you’re not at home, installing a programmable thermostat so it’s not cool in your home when you’re not at home or when you’re at work. Just simple tips like that can help.”
