GLEICHEN, ALBERTA — A Florida man who allegedly entered Canada illegally last week has been arrested near Gleichen.

RCMP officers in Gleichen, Bassano and Strathmore responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle which escalated into a “car jacking attempt” and a multi jurisdictional pursuit on the Trans Canada Highway on June 1.

According to a news release, the vehicle was allegedly observed travelling at excess speeds and in the opposite lane of traffic, forcing other vehicles off the road.

The suspect was located outside of his vehicle while allegedly attempting to steal another vehicle with violence. He was taken into custody by Gleichen RCMP.

Selasie Onegus Turner of Casselberry, Florida has been charged by Gleichen and Strathmore RCMP with flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, robbery with an offensive weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Turner remains in custody and appears in Strathmore provincial court on Tuesday. Other aspects of the investigation are ongoing. The Canada Border Service Agency, the Integrated Border Enforcement Team and U.S, law enforcement agencies are assisting with the investigation.
