MEDICINE HAT – A man with ties to Medicine Hat was killed in a tragic freak accident over the weekend in British Columbia.

Matthew Jarvis was struck and killed by a train after his wheelchair got stuck on the tracks, in Chilliwack.

Matthew spent many years living in Medicine Hat and still has family residing in the city.

Witnesses say two women jumped out of their vehicles and attempted to free him. One of the good Samaritans injured her hand as she reportedly held on to Jarvis and kept trying to pull him to safety as the freight train rolled by.

“These angels that tried to help him off the train tracks because his wheels were stuck I thank you, I don’t know who you are but I thank you that you were there with him. He didn’t have to die alone,” said Matthew’s partner Valerie Schneider.

Matthew’s family said he had been through hell and back before the tragedy.

He was involved in a life altering crash on January 17th, 2017. His family said Matthew hit some black ice while driving on Highway 1 north of Kamloops. His vehicle went down a nine-metre embankment and he was ejected from the vehicle. The crash left Matthew a paraplegic. Then, last November, Jarvis was hit by a car in a crosswalk.

“My uncle was a brave, funny, strong willed man with such a big heart,” said his niece Cassandra North. “My dad and I miss him so very much. We thought for sure he’d out live us all with the crazy stuff he’s been through in the last year. From his tragic car accident, becoming a paraplegic, going through so many health issues and now this.”

Matthew’s brother and niece live in Medicine Hat. They’ve started a gofundme page in hopes of raising money to cover costs for a funeral service and to get out to B.C. for the funeral.

“We are absolutely heart broken and we are going to miss him everyday for the rest of our lives. We just wish we could of been there for him and we hope he can Rest In Peace,” North said.

“We are grieving and appreciate all the support and love coming from all different angles.”
