MEDICINE HAT, AB — More than 400 school safety patrols were celebrated for keeping the city streets and their fellow students safe.

Hundreds of kids took over the Family Leisure Centre Wednesday afternoon for a pizza and pool party.

This is the 80th year patrols have helped make sure everyone makes to to and from school.

Allison Pike with the Alberta Motor Association said kids are taught to make eye contact with drivers and to make sure motorists are paying attention.

She said the program also helps build life-long skills.

“What it really builds within kids is leadership qualities, it builds community, it builds volunteerism,” she said. “Those patrollers are learning that the work that they’re doing in the community is important, it’s important to keep other kids safe and it’s important to contribute to our communities.”
