Redcliff seeing more interest in empty buildings

REDCLIFF, AB — The Town of Redcliff is hoping the worst of the economic downturn is behind them.

Several oil and gas companies operating in the town were among those hit the hardest following the economic downturn in Alberta in 2015, with Baker Hughes among the companies leaving town.

Last fall, Kenworth moved into the Baker Hughes building on Broadway Avenue in the town. A building next door is currently for lease, and is being renovated.

“There’s been some recent activity, just in change uses of some buildings,” said Mayor Dwight Kilpatrick. “There’s been some building renovations, nothing huge going on.

“In talking to our development officer, there’s still some people interested in looking. With the slowdown in the economy, building prices changed, and lease prices change, and now that the economy is kind of picking up a little, I think it’s spurring some interest.”

Kilpatrick says recent announcements in Medicine Hat and Cypress County could be spurring interest in Redcliff as well. He specifically cites the proposed Whitla Wind Farm, and recent announcements for Hut 8 Mining Corp and Aurora Cannabis in Medicine Hat, as potentially having a trickle down effect on the town.

“They’re all producing some interest and some optimism in the region,” he said. “Therefore, any of our buildings that have been vacant, they start looking more prospective for people.”

Kilpatrick says the town continues to work with the Economic Development Alliance of Southeast Alberta to promote Redcliff as a place to do business.
