MEDICINE HAT, AB. – It was a party fit for a princess over the weekend at the Medicine Hat Stampede, as over 100 little princesses dawned their finest gowns and tiaras on Sunday for the 1st annual 65 Roses Ball in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

Dalis Hofer brought the idea to Medicine Hat after her daughter was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis as an infant. She said hosting the ball was her way to give back to the Foundation her family is grateful for.

“This event is pretty much to get awareness out there, to raise money and to give back,” she said. “Not just what our family but many other family’s have gotten support from.”

Each little princess was invited to dress in her favourite gown said Hofer, as it was a ball complete with dancing, crafts and cupcakes.

“A lot of them love getting dressed up,” she said. Tiaras, crowns, getting their hair done and big dresses.”

Hofer said they also flew 8 real life princesses from far and wide to attend the ball.

“It took a lot of planning but we were able to book them to come all the way to Medicine Hat on their special flights,” she said. “They wanted to come raise awareness for Cystic Fibrosis.”

Jeanette Demers-Weir from Cystic Fibrosis Canada said the first 65 Roses Ball was held in Red Deer, AB seven years ago and the event has spread Canada wide to help raise money to hopefully someday find a cure.

“Cystic Fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting young Canadians for which there is not cure or control yet,” she said. “We say yet because we are really optimistic that we are very close to finding one.”

Hofer said the event raised over $10,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Canada and is already looking forward to planning the event again for next year.
